That's hysterically funny, but those first weekend numbers show it worked. How's the second weekend shaping up???

From what I can tell, people are still thronging to theaters. That stunt in Shibuya alone probably generated enough excitement to pull in an extra 1,000 viewers at least

You'll be the first to know if I see any more detailed figures...

Finally some decent photos and videos

Check out the definitive video of the June 15 re-enactment here
[Courtesy of Maca Cube's Atelier]

A better and shorter video of the 100 Smiths moving towards the camera is
here (no sound) and here (with sound)...

And now for some much more decent pictures of the action:

Neo, Morpheus and Trinity head for the rendez-vous...See the video clip here...

Just before the action began, someone in a rabbit outfit was running back and forth across the intersection,
chasing after a woman in a green shirt. Very funny you guys...Follow the white rabbit! Needless to say,
all the fans watching the livecam at home weren't amused since the distractors were right in the path of the action about to commence...
Here's what one guy trying to catch the action on the livecam had to say: "Usagi uzeeee!" (pesky rabbit!)

Close-up of the REAL ACTION
What if Trinity, Neo and Morpheus were all together in the burly brawl? This is maybe what it would look like...

Agents surround Trinity, Neo and Morpheus

Breaking free from the agents' mass huddle.

Check out these pics and MUCH much more at this site...

let's hear it for the girls!

As you can see, there were many mesumisu (female Smiths) as well. It's not only a guy thing!

Check out these pics and MUCH much more at this site...

Trinity about to exit, agents closing in...

and on a lighter note...

Who said agents can't get jiggy with it?

[Courtesy of the fujoshi ni yoru fujoshi no tame no Sumisu-moe-beya (flaming Smith room by rotten girls for rotten girls)

no comment!

I saved the best for last...Let's hear it for the gang!

The Osaka Re-enactment!

AND NOW FOR THE OSAKA RE-ENACTMENT!
I'm really excited about this one
It looks like they had a BLAST!

Check out these videos and you'll see what I mean

Previews for the Osaka June 15 re-enactment:

Preview 1
Opening voice-over: "Take the blue pill and everything will be the same as before. Take the red pill and go to Osaka!"...

Preview 2
Starts with the Japanese voice-over for the official Reloaded TV clip. Then more action scenes from the Osaka re-enactment. And, of course, since this is Osaka, the comedy capital of Japan, there's some irreverent fun as well. In the last scene, the music for "Kuidaore" or "Eat 'til you drop" (Osaka is known for good food and this little ditty is in some commercials, I think) plays in the background while we see two very famous icons of Osaka: (Agent Smith on the left dressed as) the mechanical clown who greets customers in front of the famous Kuidaore restaurant, and (Neo as) the Glico man (a huge neon sign of this running man, the food-maker Glico's logo, is in the Shinsaibashi entertainment district)

And now for a KICKIN' short music video of the Osaka re-enactment (you have GOT to see this one). Right HERE
[Created by CG Banjunin]

The re-enactment footage

Clip 1
Traffic stops at an overpass in front of the movie theater. Out of our way! <100 Smiths run after Neo>
Clip 2
Agents running down the stairs...
Clip 3
Neo taunts one of the agents. Come and get it...
Clip 4
Burly brawl re-enactment. Neo breaks free and agents go flying ... well, kind of...

And now for the pictures

Early agents lined up in front of the movie theater, waiting for reinforcements

Watch for Neo followed by agents on the lower level of the underpass

Agents in pursuit... Look at the guy holding a banana at the front of the pack! Those zany Osakans

Burly brawl going down

Now that's what I'm talking about! Fighting action...

Revolutions preview scene ... minus the rain...
[all pictures courtesy of Ochiru Shuukuriimu] (Falling Cream Puff)

But that's only the beginning!

Don't they make a cute couple?

All the commotion brought in the cops...but they soon left when they realized
those legions of dark suits weren't yakuza...

Fight!

Agents dispersed by Neo in the burly brawl

Trinity and the keymaker make a getaway on their ... koala?

Wow!!!!!!

Amazing videos! Im glad that the japanese seem to appreciate the Matrix Reloaded so much I think that would be very rewarding for the Wachowski Brothers, considering that japanese culture/anime is one of their greatest influences for the Matrix!

I hope you dont mind, i am linking the videos at matrixcommunity.org and matrixfans.net so that more fans can see how well received the Matrix is all over the world!!! I'm also giving them a link to this rottentomatoes.com thread so that more matrix fans can talk to you about how well the film is being received in Japan!

Thank you so much!

P.S. By the way, the last two reenactment clips [Osaka] you gave are similar [both are named "Osaka3" and have the same content]

I wish there WAS a way of showing the W bros. all of this stuff (^_^)

OK, I fixed the link and now it should work...

Hey xaky Saw your post on matrixcommunity.org! Thanks for the additions. I have heard for a fact that the Wachowski brothers actually visit the matrix fan boards (matrixcommunity.org and matrixfans.net). That's how they recruited some people to be on the Matrix Revisited DVD! I believe that somehow they [or someone on the crew] will be able to find out about how wonderful the reception for the matrix is back in Japan

Apparently, the video crew is working on it right now.
In the meantime, a general edit video of footage from all three re-enactments (Shibuya 6/8 and 6/15 + Osaka 6/15) is out here.

Also, Shibuya "Morpheus", as well as Latte (who participated in the Shibuya event) are posting messages over at Matrix Community so check it out. Hopefully, they'll come by and say hello here too

Thanks!

Yes, that's what I'd like to know...

I heard that some people were doing small-scale skits and the like, but nothing like the Japanese crew.

Maybe it will happen.

Reloaded set to beat all boxoffice records in Japan?

Here's a translation of an article appearing in the on-line version of the Yukan Fuji sports magazine here on June 17:

Matrix headed for monster-class boxoffice performance
Harry Potter and Spirited Away in shooting range?!

Japanese boxoffice earnings for the US film "The Matrix: Reloaded" (released June 7) is setting record after record.

The film's opening seven-day boxoffice earnings of $30.3 million have now surpassed the $27.1 million earned by "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" (released last year), and in "weekly earnings" including non-opening figures, it has also surpassed the $30 million earned by "Spirited Away" (2001), thus claiming the top position in both categories.

Furthermore, it also broke new records in opening nine-day boxoffice revenue ($39.6 million) and in fastest attainment of the 3 billion yen [$25.5 million] mark (5 days). This, combined with previously shattered records for sneak sneak preview, sneak preview and combined sneak sneak and sneak preview earnings makes it an 8-record blitz.

You heard it here first...

xaky,

Excellent job! This thread just keeps getting better. By the way when I was a kid we had a japanese foreign exchange student named Megumi, did you meet her when you were in Japan? Just kidding. (But we did really have a foreign exchange student and that was a lot of fun!)

Not so dissimilar

Hi tankblitzer,

Well, I'm participating in a few of those boards myself and I can tell you that the questions are not too dissimilar to the ones I've seen on other forums.

What did the architect say, how did Neo stop the squiddie, what's up with Agent Smith now, who's the guys opposite Neo at the end, etc. And some people are talking philosophy too, and it's not Japanese philosophy there - same as what we've been discussing here for the most part. But take a look at that poll I posted. That gives you a brief and very superficial (National Enquirer level) snapshot of some Japanese reactions to the film.

I'll let you know if I find more.

Shibuya re-enactment makes the NEWS!

The Matrix: Reloaded re-enactment in Shibuya, Tokyo has landed this story today (June 17) on one of Japan's premiere on-line film news sources, eiga.com (eiga means movie in Japanese):

Caption under photo: "Apparently, the next round will be on June 29."

100 Smiths converge in Shibuya!
Simultaneous multiple Matrix-fests throughout Japan

The record-breaking hit film "The Matrix: Reloaded" has become the biggest "event" movie of the year. As if to demonstrate the excitement, events are currently breaking out in all regions of Japan.

The first version of the event, which began with a recruitment call on Japan's largest BBS website, Nichanneru [channel 2], was staged on June 8 at the north entrance of Shibuya station, where about ten Agent Smith impersonators chased down Neo. This incited fans all over the country to stage similar events in such places as Sapporo, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. On June 15 when the second round reclaimed Shibuya, an amazing 100+ Agent Smiths joined in among onlookers and passers-by, creating a minor sensation. At Hachiko square in front of the station, Neo, Morpheus and Trinity impersonators re-enacted highlights and fight scenes from the film to the cheers and applause of the crowd. It's oddly refreshing to see an event not organized by film distributors or entertainment companies but spontaneously generated by normal fans.

Great to know that the Japanese are also inclined to the philosophical/spiritual aspects of the film It will be amazing to see the premiere of the Matrix Revolutions there! I can imagine that the excitement level will be extremely high...and if the stars visit there again, they'll be very happy with the reception [perhaps much more happy than their reception in the west? This is because the japanese fans seem to sincerely love the matrix! (No offense to westerners...)]
