The Daily Bones For Monday, June 11

 ANGEL RERUNS 6 AM DEEP DOWN  “Snap to, buckaroo. The only one turning to ashes is that patricidal pup of yours.” Yes the world sucks. Angel and those in his orbit seemed destined for more then their fair share of misery. But Lorne is saying that what is important is not what happens to you but what you do in response. .................... .........So, when Angel grabs Wesley by the throat but subsequently recognizes him, he allows his former ally to pull his hand away having now let go of the outburst of anger that overtook him in “Forgiving”. Then, when Wesley offers Angel his blood he takes it. But he does not abandon himself to blind hunger. He doesn’t vamp out and only takes some blood, even though the quantity he took was clearly not sufficient to restore his health or even assuage his hunger. In this Angel rejects the desire for revenge and the need for blood he gave in to in his hallucinations. 7 AM GROUND STATE  A ground state is the state of least possible energy in a physical system. And here the term is used as a metaphor for someone’s feeling of being lost. That word is used several times in the episode, especially by Angel, to denote a feeling of no longer being in control, of being confused as to personal identity or direction. But, as we shall see in due course, this episode isn't really about this feeling as such. Rather it is about why a person has the feeling in the first place. In “The House Always Wins” on the other hand, the idea that Angel has lost his sense of destiny is never adequately explained and is explored in a confused and confusing fashion. Comparisons with “Double or Nothing” therefore simply highlights its inadequacies....... 7 AM SLOUCHING TOWARDS BETHLEEM  ANGEL as a series has often made very good use thematically of literary and other artistic sources. But never perhaps has an episode owed quite so much to one particular source as “Slouching towards Bethlehem” does. And in Yeats’ vision this apocalypse will arrive in a period of confusion, much like that through which he lived. “The Second Coming” can be divided into two parts. The first describes the state of the world into which the beast is to be born. David says "Well, do you know anything about Spalding Gray?" They say no, and he says something about it being really good and they should come see it, but they decline and continue on their way." Perfect symetry, with the beginning of the run! LOVE UNDER WRAPS Because neither the brooding, caustic Booth nor the detached, analytical Bones is prone to flowery emotional confessions, most of their supposedly budding romance is inferred, which pleases David Boreanaz. "I don't really like to dive into the soap opera-y aspect of the show," he says. "We did that with one show this year that I really didn't like and I told (creator Hart Hanson), 'You know, I'm not into this whole soap opera thing that you're doing right now'. The Daily Bones For Wednesday, June 13

ANGEL RERUNS 6 AM SUPERSYMMETRY  Supersymmetry is a major theory that tries to explain fundamental behavior in nuclear and particle physics. It states that every known elementary particle must have a "superpartner." ........But undoubtedly the most puzzling aspect of this episode concerns Cordelia. It might help your appreciation on the focus on her relationship with Connor and Angel if you actually cared about whether she and Angel ever got together.... The writers seem to be trying to create a parallel between Wesley and Fred planning a joint murder on the one hand and Connor playing out a schoolboy crush on the other. 7 AM SPIN THE BOTTLE  Truth or Consequences. The object of this game is to force those chosen by the spin of the bottle to reveal something about themselves, the more embarrassing the better. And in effect this was what we saw in this episode as each of our protagonists, through the reversion to their teenaged selves, unwittingly revealed something about themselves. ............ ............ In TeenLiam we see his raw anxieties. And what comes across very powerfully here is his feeling of being worthless, a victim of people and forces beyond his control and someone who was powerless in the face of those people and forces. We also get the sense of isolation that such feelings instill in him. As the members of Angel Investigations adjust to being teenagers again they naturally start trying to get to know one another. Angel, however, is different. He wanders off on his own. In part this can be explained by the fact that to TeenLiam his surroundings are so much stranger than they are to anyone else. But there is more to it than that. Everyone is trying to work out what happened to him or her. Talking to each other is the way most do this. In contrast Angel sits by himself. DB ON STAGE PICS THANKS TESS RYAN!  Spaulding Gray: Stories Left To Tell, Guesting David Boreanaz by makdHe's tall. Like, you know...tall...almost imposing in height. (But, dudes: he was on stage, on a platform on stage, so: even taller) He's graceful. Remember Angel fighting the mercenary in Conviction? Graceful. DB? is graceful. He moves well. He doesn't move dorkily or goofily. He's neat - the way you expect a former athlete to move. It's nice to watch. DAVID BOREANAZ IN THE FLESH (NOT THAT MUCH FLESH, YOU PERRVS) by a2zmomCan I just say that that book looked doll size in DB's hands. They really are the biggest hands I ever seen. And I'd just like to say that sitting exactly two rows away, he is a very good looking guy. Make that very, very good looking. Scratch that, make that oh my gawd, shoot me now, I've gone to heaven. The Daily Bones For Thursday, June 14

ANGEL RERUNS 6 AM APOCALYPSE NOWISH  She admits to Angel that she continues to love him. But then, as we have already seen, she tells him of her recovered memories about Angelus and what he had done. And those memories seem to make a huge difference to her, so she tells him that they can't be together at least for the time being. Now first of all her reasons here do not make a whole lot of sense. She actually did experience Angelus at first hand - in Sunnydale. ................ ...........But worst of all was her seduction of Connor. So, having admitted her love for Angel and then put (at least a temporary) end to his hopes because of his past, she then has sex with his son for really no good reason at all in the face of all the responsibilities to someone who was not only much younger, much less experienced but was also highly unstable and the son of the person she claimed to love. "hard to believe" doesn't really cover this. 7 AM HABEAS CORPSES  What we see again and again in “Habeas Corpses” is the darker impulses of human nature thwarting good intentions. In particular we see a team which cannot focus on the task at hand – be that fighting the Beast or rescuing Connor. Instead its members seem to be worrying about their own injured feelings or intent on picking fights and settling scores with one another. In other words we see the duality of human nature: the mixture of the good and the bad. Just as Lilah said to Wesley, once you cross the line into selfishness, jealousy and hatred it had implications for you and for the way that you carry on your life. And it is here that we see the central importance of this aspect of ANGEL, not only to the immediate problems that the members of Angel Investigations faced, not only to the progress of the present story arc but to the whole future of ouR titular vampire. 7 DEADLY SINS - COMBINED  ANGEL RERUNS 6 AM LONG DAY'S JOURNEY  “Long Day’s Journey into Night” is perhaps Eugene O’Neill’s greatest work. .... ..... The action takes place in the course of a single day, starting just after breakfast and ending at midnight. But this actual long day’s journey into night is but a metaphor for the family’s own descent into darkness. In parallel, this episode of ANGEL also tells the story of a journey from daylight to total darkness. But that story too is but a metaphor for the descent of another family (headed by an Irish-American vampire) into despair. And in the writers development of this metaphor in the ANGEL version of “Long Day’s Journey Into Night” we find the same basic themes we find in the O’Neill play. 7 AM AWAKENING  Next, the apology scene between Angel and Wesley simply rang false. Someone like Wesley who could hold himself the injured party when he had actually been responsible for Holtz’s kidnapping of Connor isn’t going to admit he was careless because Wo-Pang attacked Angel. Similarly, the apology scene between Angel and Cordelia bore no resemblance to any other scene between Cordelia and Angel this season. She had always been the one with the upper hand. She had always made it seem as though things were his fault. Remember after she confessed to Connor that they had hurt Angel.  ANGEL RERUNS 6 AM SOULLESS  Season 4 has so far been an extended reflection on the psychological and emotional frailties of our little band of “heroesâ€. Naturally, Angel has been the subject of most attention. But everyone has played their full part in the disintegration of Angel Investigations. So there is a nice symmetry about the fact that whereas “Awakening†concentrated on Angel’s frustrations, “Soulless†exposes the insecurities, jealousies, distrusts and hatreds of Wesley, Gunn and Connor. And it does so through the medium of Angelus’ searching interrogation of each of them. Cordelia sums up the danger he poses in the following words: “He distorts everything. He lies with the truth. It's part of what makes him so dangerous.†Of course, Angelus himself puts things slightly differently “We all want something, Wes. It's the way of the world. Everybody's got an agenda.†7 AM CALVARY  I have previously referred to the clever way in which ME gives to episodes titles which have different layers of meaning. “Calvary†is a good case in point. The word is derived from the Latin “Calvaria†meaning a skull. And of course the episode turns around a dark magic ceremony which prominently features a skull. But “Calvary†is only in modern usage because it is the Latin translation of the Aramaic word “Golgotha†used to describe Christ’s place of execution.....Because of that association the word “Calvary†is used as a synonym for any great ordeal. ************KIZZY'S SCOOP************************ KRISTEN: 28 EPISODES OF BONES THIS SEASON! The Daily Bones For Wednesday, June 20

 ANGEL RERUNS 6AM SALVAGE  The title of this episode comes from something Faith says when she walks into the Hyperion for the first time: “Arm yourself how you like, but I want you to carry the tranq gun. If I can't take him down, I want you to be ready to take the shot, yeah? In case anyone has any other ideas, this is a salvage mission, not search and destroy, OK?” Here she is clearly referring to her desire to capture Angelus rather than kill him. Only by doing so do she and the remainder of Angel Investigations have a hope of restoring Angel’s soul. If they kill Angelus, then that is the end of Angel too. However this episode is a salvage mission in an even larger sense. Salvage is the process of rescuing the hull, equipment or cargo of a shipwreck. Generally, it occurs when the ship sinks, runs aground or is drifting. The crew has abandoned her or at least lost control. Well, Angel Investigation’s efforts to combat the Beast are pretty much a shipwreck. 7 AM RELEASE  This is a very strong episode. It is dark. We see Gunn and Fred struggling with the legacy of what they have done. We see Cordelia setting up Connor to take sides against his friends. We see Wesley, far from changing his attitude for the better in the aftermath of Lilah’s death, becoming an even darker character. And we see the one hope for progress mired in an internal struggle for her own soul. But in spite of all this, ultimately this episode shows that, no matter what the difficulties and temptations, human beings can and should make the right choices. And refreshingly it asserts that there are moral absolutes, lines that you do not cross no matter what temporary advantage they seem to give you. ANGEL RERUNS 6 AM INSIDE OUT  When at the end of this episode Cordelia’s child is born, that which was inside her came out. Yes, “Inside Out” is an episode full of opposites.(THE "BABY", Skip, Darla, Cordelia) But more important that the opposites themselves is the way that they are used to illustrate the theme of the episode, namely the freedom of action that each of us enjoys and the responsibility that goes with that freedom. As we can see from events shown and referred to in this episode, the word is full of confusing currents pulling us in opposite directions. But ultimately the way we go is not down to those currents. Rather it is a matter of choice for each of us to make. 7 AM SHINY HAPPY PEOPLE  R.E.M. is a band known for songs that are deep, meaningful and often sad. “Shiny, Happy People” is just the opposite of songs like these. It is about people who are so positively happy that they seem to be shining. And there is really no depth to it at all. It seems to say: this is just a really happy song. And so long as you’re happy who cares about anything else? It is such an obvious contrast to R.E.M.’s other songs that a lot of people claim to detect a note of sarcasm in it. They suggest that the band were so tired of everyone saying how dark and depressing their songs were that they wrote this one just to be smart asses. Indeed I think Michael Snipe once said that “Shiny, Happy People” had no redeeming value and he wasn’t proud of it. Be that as it may, there is very little doubt but that the song and its lyrics have no plot and no meaning. It’s just full of empty, stupid (in the sense of careless or lacking in thought) fun. And in the way that the title to this episode reflects the title to the REM song, we get a clear hint of what the episode is all about. [jessicajoslin.com]  ANGEL RERUNS 6 AM THE MAGIC BULLET  A magic bullet is usually defined as such a complete and easy solution to a seemingly impossible problem that it seems magical. And in this episode we saw a magic bullet in just that sense. But the real significance of the term “magic bullet” in this episode is quite different. While Fred is still on the run from Jasmine, she goes back to the Magic Bullet Book Store. And it is this fact that explains the title of the store. The “Magic Bullet Theory” is how the majority of critics of the Warren Commission view its finding that only one assassin shot President John F. Kennedy. They claim that the bullet that killed the President would have to be magic to do everything the Warren Commission said it did. Ironically, however, Jasmine reveals to him that there was no conspiracy to assassinate Kennedy: 7 AM SACRIFICE  The centerpiece of this episode was in the way that it articulated the philosophical difference between Jasmine's concept of world peace and the concept of free will shared by Angel and the members of his team. If the Jasmine arc has been about anything, it has been about the importance of free will. Up until now we have tended to define Jasmine's actions as wrong because of her lust for power and the objective evils she has committed for that purpose. But if the arc was going to mean more than "megalomania is wrong", the writers needed to explain convincingly why free will itself was important and why giving it up was wrong. And I think that they managed to do so here by articulating a coherent view of why free will was an essential element in what made us humans.
