Pirates of the Caribbean 2

Richards To Play Depp's Father

Hollywood hunk Johnny Depp's wish has been granted - Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards is set to play his father in Pirates Of The Caribbean: Treasures Of The Lost Abyss. Depp has admitted that he based his character Captain Jack Sparrow on the aging rocker when he shot the 2003 hit Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl, and now the stars are reportedly set to team up on screen. Earlier this year, Depp was alleged to have expressed an interest in Richards playing his father. The sequel is set to begin filming in February, with director Gore Verbinski taking the helm again.

(Article courtesy of http://www.imdb.com/news/wenn/#1

So we learn 3 things: The name of the second movie is Pirates of the Caribbean: Treasures of the Lost Abyss, Keith Richards is playing Jack's father, and the movie begins filming in February.

Anyone else think that Keith Richards being in this movie is odd?

No...I just started coming back to the boards the other day, so I likely missed it. I've been loaded down with schoolwork.

I haven't been paying attention to any rumors surrounding the sequel. I will be compelled to see it because of Depp and Rush but I can't imagine Richards will add anything.

I think Richards is an insanely inspired choice. As for the film, I'm excited in the sense that I'm hoping it will really truly run with its premise unlike the plodding but still fun first one. I'm hoping for more directorial flair and skill from Verbinski to tell you the truth. I'm also hoping for more dashing heroics rather than great-but-swollen-visual effects.

Come on, the addition of Keef is about the only reason to see this movie - at least it has something for adults now. Maybe.

Hmm...It's possible. One thing is for sure, he'd make a very interesting Pirate.

Also, with one presumably small role Richards will most likely accomplish what Mick Jagger has pathetically strived for off and on over decades - movie success. Richards socks it to Mick again, first out-selling his solo efforts and garnering critical respect with his own band the Expensive Winos, now a key role in a popular movie. Jagger will be munching his heart out.

I'm just worried he'll be a bad actor. Singers who are put in movies usually take the same turn for the worst.

Most obvious examples:

1) Jennifer Lopez
2) Mariah Carey

Really? I always assumed she was a singer. Either way, she sucks.

Yes, those are obvious. But hardly representative.

Consider these veritable one-offs:

Joe Strummer and Screamin' Jay Hawkins in Mystery Train.

Greg Allman in Rush.

Tom Waits in Down By Law and Ironweed. (Among others.)

James Brown, Ray Charles, and Aretha Franklin in The Blues Brothers.

The Kemp Brothers in The Krays.

Johnny (Rotten) Lydon in Corrupt.

Dwight Yoakum in Sling Blade.

Debbie Harry in Videodrome and Heavy.

If not great, they got the job done with little or no embarrassment. Keef just has to be himself a la his Simpsons gig. Dig?
