Jiri Trnka, Jan Svankmajer, and The Brothers Quay
so i've recently gotten into stop-motion animation and have found these artists. the first one i bought was the short films of the brothers quay. amazing. then i bought their full-length picture "institute benjamenta", which i haven't finished because i keep falling asleep (not the movie's fault). in my last order to amazon.com, i picked up "alice" by jan svankmajer, which i also haven't finished, but i loved the short film included on the dvd called "darkness light darkness". and today, on my lunch break, the short films of jiri trnka arrived and i watched "the hand".
i must say, for his time period, trnka is absolutely amazing. the camera movement while the figures are moving isn't as polished as it is in the quays' films, but of course, there was less technology too. is anyone else interested or particularly knowledgeable about stop-motion artists? because i'd love some more recommendations... matt
