I've seen fewer than 20 Walsh films, only a fraction of his output, but most have ranged from really good to great. The one I saw most recently was an entertaining but seemingly forgotten Western called Cheyenne.
Walsh: 1. White Heat 2. Gentleman Jim 3. The Strawberry Blonde 4. High Sierra 5. The Thief of Bagdad I've seen 40 Douglas features, as well as a couple of TV movies. Hard to pick 5! Douglas: 1. The Big Carnival 2. The Bad and the Beautiful 3. Lonely are the Brave 4. There Was a Crooked Man 5. Young Man with a Horn High among the runners-up: The Indian Fighter. |

Walsh isn't someone I'm familiar enough with to comment on, but Kirk Douglas is my favourite actor and IMHO, the best screen actor from that golden age Hollywood generation that is slowly dying off (ie Peck and Jimmy Stewart). He took the sort of risks few leading men did in his day (ie producing untouchable projects and breaking the Mcarthy Blacklist) and was an actor, not just a movie star. I admire the fact that even when he was considered one of the top 3 leading men in Hollywood, he would regularly take supporting roles (In Harms Way, with John Wayne being a good example) as long as it was a great part, instead of having to be the lead all the time.Douglas was also responsible for taking a chance on the vision of Stanley Kubrick when no one else was interested, for which we all owe him a considerable debt. We live in an era when it's a big deal for a movie star like Bruce Willis to give a noteworthy performance once every few years.Kirk Douglas routinely gave great performance, and in all the movies I've seen from him, never gave a bad one. The only modern movie star of his ability and screen presence I can compare him to is Russell Crowe. It's criminal that he never won an acting oscar, but his driven nature as both a producer an actor meant he wasn't very well liked (okay, that's code for the guy was a jerk. But he's become a great and nice man in his old age
)1 Paths of Glory 2 Lust for Life 3 Spartacus 4 Champion 5 The Bold and the Beautiful Honorable mentions: Ace In The Hole Gunfight at the OK Corral Detective Story The Vikings Lonely are the brave In Harms Way Seven Days In May Town Without Pity Last edited by graze; 07-01-2003 at 09:50 AM. |

A couple of tough ones to whittle down to a top five, but here's how mine work today:
Raoul Walsh 1. High Sierra (1941) 2. Thief of Bagdad, The (1924) 3. Roaring Twenties, The (1939) 4. White Heat (1949) 5. Gentleman Jim (1942) Some others that almost made it.... Captain Horatio Hornblower (1951) They Died with Their Boots On (1941) Strawberry Blonde, The (1941) Me and My Gal (1932) Klondike Annie (1936) (ya gotta love Mae West )Objective, Burma! (1945) Kirk Douglas 1. Paths of Glory (1957) 2. Seven Days in May (1964) 3. Spartacus (1960) 4. Detective Story (1951) 5. 20000 Leagues Under the Sea (1954) (I just love this movie too much to not include it )Any of these others should have taken the place of #5 above: Vikings, The (1958) Gunfight at the O.K. Corral (1957) Lust for Life (1956) Big Sky, The (1952) Young Man with a Horn (1950)

Raoul Walsh (his only acting credit was in Birth of a Nation playing John Wilkes Booth!) but as a director, Walsh was one of the greatest:
1. White Heat 2. Pursued 3. They Drive by Night 4. High Sierra 5. Strawberry Blonde Kirk Douglas 1. The Bad and the Beautiful 2. Detective Story 3. Paths of Glory 4. Lust for Life 5. Out of the Past (I know there's plenty of other lead roles to choose from, but Douglas' slimy Whit Sterling is great!)
