i don't quite understand the relationship between law, marriage and the govenment but if gay marriage becomes illegal then you are surely getting closer to homosexuality being outlawed....
Alarming. I didn't know it was legal now, i don't think it is here.... what does the law have to do with it anyway... how can straight marriage be any more legal than any other.

Recently, Massachusetts ruled that it was against their Constitution to deny gays marriahe rights which sparked a complete backlash from the country. It's getting scary here again.

There are two things to consider that are more important:
--As this past summer has demonstrated, progress is being made. Slowly, sure, but inevitable nonetheless. --40% polled said they opposed the amendment. That's more than enough to ensure that it's never, ever passed.

I would like to see the term "marriage" be solely a cultural institution (ie. within a church) and to see civil unions be open to anyone who wants to have one. The government shouldn't be involved in marriage, but there is a need to track couples for income tax and benefits, and child care (in the case of separation and divorce, and death). If you want to legally become bound to your partner - regardless of your sex - have a civil union. If you want to get married (ie. have it sanctioned by a church), then that ceremony might be additionally available to you. If a particular church wants to marry gays, then fine. If a church doesn't want to marry gays, that's fine too, but gays would still be able to have a civil union and get the benefits (and the disadvantages) of people who are currently able to.

The contradictory state of religioun once again in the fore-front...
Come on...It's a basic human right to marry whomever you want. Religion getting in the thick of things just sends the topic straight to hell. The religious right doesn't own Marriage... the dictionary clearly states it was the ceremony of marrying-- Wether that be in a church or not, which is soley up to the couple.

I started to read that article somewhere eelse, then gave up. I think it was written by a retarded five year old. I particularly loved the 'duh' statement that those who were the most for gay marriages were the under thirty year olds and people who knew gay people. I laughed myself sick over that bit. Is the NY Times hiring people straight from Burger King to write their articles? As for marriage-I don't approve of it. For anyone. But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.
