Gegen die Wand

This is such a great movie, anybody else seen this?

Is "Head-On" supposed to be the english title? I would never go see an american movie named "Head-On". That sucks.

"Against the Wall" oder "Into the Wall" oder einige andere buchstäbliche Übersetzung wäre viel besser gewesen. Aber ein sehr toller Film, Schade, dass er nie in Amerika (oder auf "Rotten Tomatoes") bekannt wird. Und Sibel Kekilli war wunderschön.

It sucks that this movie has got no attention on Rotten Tomatoes. It's seriously probably my favorite movie of all time now. If anyone else has seen this movie let me know (in english or german I don't care). Gibt es Deutsche hier? Wenn einer von euch diesen Film gesehn hat, schreib etwas hier (Englisch oder Deutsch, mir egal).

this is definitely the best movie I have seen in recent years (say, at least, since Spirited Away)... it's a movie so real, so passionate and powerful... fatih akın (who has also worked as a dj in the past) uses the music as no other director manages around the world... birol ünel's performance is the most charismatic and magnetic and impressive I've seen in years, and Sibel Kekilli shines in her much complex role...

I recommend it to everyone... you will probably not see a better movie this year...

It's sad that films like these aren't more widely released. I am so excited about this movie--saw it THREE times while in Berlin. I thought it was going to be released in the US, but perhaps I was wrong. But I have a feeling that it will be released sometime next year, when it might be nominated in the foreign film category. (sort of like what happened with Goodbye-Lenin. I really want my friends to see this film, so I'm hoping it does come out over here with subtitles. It was just such an amazing movie and I was very lucky that I was in Berlin when this film already came out, enabling me to watch it. So I just want to add my enthusiasm for the film. If anyone is a New Yorker, I'm trying to find out if the Film series MoMA usually puts out (the 2-4 week GErman Film series) will include this Film. one or two years ago they played Solino by Fatih Akin, so it's quite possible they will play gegen die wand. Crossing my fingers)
I agree with you zeitgeist, das ist einer blöde Titel. Against the Wall would have been the perfect English idiomatic equivalent, which MEANS THE SAME. I don't understand why they chose Head-On.

It is an extremely weak film made for the pleasure of good ol' Fatih Akin. He even admitted it. Some of the actions of the characters are unusual and impossible to believe. The performances are what make this film stand out.

Saw it and liked it. I couldn't take my eyes off either one of them when they were on the screen. Birol Unel made me think of Mickey Rourke - but a better actor.

I agree with you, Armenian. It is a wanna-be movie. The celluloid is practically dripping with pretension and self-consciousness, but the film just does not deliver; it suffers from poor composition and structure, weak dialogue, a rambling script, and spotty character development.

As for you, bonoman, I have no beef with those who like this glorified soap opera. Your comment to Armenian, however, demonstrates shallow snobbery and an inability to discuss the subject substantively. You believe, apparently, that anyone who does not like a German film must be a Walmart/Hollywood junkie. I can see a formula etched in the back of your mind:

Hollywood = bad
Not Hollywood = good

Is this your idea of sophistication? In that case, my friend, you are easily misled. Take any kind of crap, slap a non-Hollywood label on it, and you'll hail it as a masterpiece. Right? Newsflash: not everything made outside of Hollywood is praiseworthy.

A truly cultured and sophisticated person will not be trapped by preconceived notions expressed in your comment. That goes for people too, not just movies.

Fresh! A message to all the negative Nellies out there

The weird thing is that I can actually see Hollywood making a movie like this one. But the story won't be nearly as compelling, and the script will not be as tight (think bloated budgets). The odds are stacked against Hollywood making a movie like this. An Indie filmmaker has far greater artistic freedom to do what he/she wants.

Having said that, if you disliked the movie simply because you thought it was overhyped before you even saw it, then you obviously pre-judged it.

This movie has so far been a huge critical and commercial success - at least in the rest of the world (outside the USA), so I don't need to convince anyone that it is a great film. But I do have one piece of advice to the few negative Nellies out there, who due to their petty little hangups and/or bigotry, have deprived themselves of enjoying this fantastic film. Please open your mind and watch it again. Trust me, once you 'get' the movie, it will hook you!
