Ben Stiller: GOOD OR SUX?

Ok, the fella has gotten a lot of hate on the boards lately, and I thought I'd set the record straght here. I love the guy. I think he's a wonderful comedic performer, and I even think he has legit dramatic range. It's hard for me to pin down a favorite Ben Stiller performance. Even when he takes a starring role in a terrible movie (which, contrary to popular belief, happened a lot more often earlier in his career before he was an A-list guy), he's at least somewhat worth watching.

Plus, I like the guy. I've never heard of any negative stories about him. He seems to really love his wife, to the point of being the only one in Hollywood willing to cast her in films. He seems to be the head of Hollywood's current comedy frat (members: Vince Vaughn, Will Ferrell, Andy Dick, the Wilson brothers, etc.) and he does favors for all his buddies, cameos and producing gigs.

So, I give it to you, Tomatoes... good or sux?

Fabfunk I'm with you. He's over criticized. He's a nice guy who hasn't really done anything awful directly to the public like some other celebrities. Some of his movies, yes, are bad, and sometimes he isn't funny, but still, I like him. He has had some good ones, plus, his wife's super hot.

He's hit or miss. I like his type of humor but he's made way too many bad movies recently.

Zoolander
Meet the Parents
Flirting With Disaster
Royal Tenenbaums

These are the only movies I need to say he's GOOD. Envy, Along Came Polly, and Mystery Men are horrible but forgivable.

The Pup likes him. Flirting with Disaster was good, and I don't care, I laughed at his performance in Duplex. I have his Ben Stiller Show on DVD, and it is quite brilliant at times, but falls short on some skits. He did make some bad films (Envy) I'd rather take a chance on a Ben Stiller film than a Chris Rock film.

I'm a fan. I just wish he'd branch out a bit more. Permanent Midnight is a fine example of how Stiller can shine when he wants to.

That scene where he takes the baby on a ride to buy Herion, very disturbing. I expected a comedy from the film, but was pleasantly surprised at what it turned out to be....**explodes into an Ethel Merman song**

Though, as you all have said, he's done some weaker films recently (including the atrocious Meet the Fockers), I like the guy and think he's done some truly funny things. Great in Royal Tenenbaums, too.

I really like him. He's a great comedy performer, but his ratio of good to bad movies is a bit off at the moment.

He should try a few more straightish roles, like he did in The Royal Tenenbaums.

I agree. He would actually be one of my favorite actors if he did more movies like that. I like his comedy in his movies. That's usually the only reason I watch his movies because otherwise the story to most of his movies sucks.

But let's be honest:

Owen Wilson > Ben Stiller

My brother thinks I'm crazy for believing this, I believe he's a f</>uckwit.

Owen Wilson sucks. You'd think with all of the money he has made he'd be able to fix his nose.

First, Owen Wilson is hilarious.

Second, I typically find Ben Stiller at least funny in pretty much anything, but I'm never really interested in seeing him play stupid characters, like in Dodgeball. I would much rather see him in a role like in Royal Tenenbaums.

Also, he's pretty funny in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

What the hell? When was he in Curb? Have you already had the fourth season in the US? We've only just had the third.

I think it's interesting to know where Owen (and more so Luke) came from. Owen and Wes wrote "Bottle Rocket" in University and Luke was just asked to be in it. Now look where they are.

He's a talented, and sometimes hilarious guy, but he's clearly made a ton of bad choices, and I'm starting to suffer from Stiller overexposure (same with Jack Black), and I'm starting to develop a distinct dislike for the guy that probably wouldn't be there if he wasn't so omnipresent.
