Lightbulb Movies that transport you to Europe

Hey everyone,

I could use some specific movie recommendations. I'm planning on taking a backpacking trip through Europe soon and I want to get myself in the appropriate mood by watching the appropriate movies.

What films can you suggest that take place in a European country or countries that are really beautiful or really make you want to visit that place? So far, I can only think of three: Roman Holiday (Italy), Il Postino (Italy), and The Third Man (Austria).

Got any ideas? I know there must be tons I'm forgetting. Thanks!

It's practically a Tuscany commercial.

Most of the opening scenes of Summerisle were filmed in my home village.

I'd have to say for backpacking you can't skip American Werewolf.
But for a road less traveled I'd choose The Dreamers.

Frantic, although it's probably not the side of France you'd want to see.

"Don't Look Now". Although when in Europe, watch out for those crazy midgets with razors!

I want to go backpacking through Europe. I've always wanted to "Do It" with woman with hairy pits.

Cinema Paradiso - My heart melts whenever I watch this film.

Under the Tuscan Sun - I actually haven't seen this...but it's filmed in Tuscany, so it can't be all bad, right?

Romeo and Juliet - the Zefferelli version, not the awful Luhrman movie. Not actually filmed in Verona, but it's still gorgeous to look at. Anybody know where it was actually filmed?

Life is Beautiful - Hmmmm, maybe just watch the first half since you want to focus on Europe's positive aspects.

Count of Monte Cristo - Not the recent Jim Cavaziel version, but a mini-series done for French TV starring Gerard Depradiu. Most faithful version to the book I've seen...not to mention it's all in french. I believe A&E released it on DVD.

Italian for Begginers - A nice, romantic film from Denmark, the climax of which occurs in Venice.

Can you tell I have a bit of a thing for Italy?

I'm realizing most of my picks are films set in the distant past that explore European history. I think were I to go over there again sometime, it'd be spent visiting all the historical sites more than anything else.

But I'd suggest:
Before Sunset
Amelie
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Braveheart
Gladiator
From Hell
1492
- Only because I have actually been to what was Ferdinand's castle.
