Post in here if you hate the Oscars and don't give one damn about them.

Just wondering who else shares my view. The Academy has such a narrow and skewed vision of what they consider worthy, I just said the hell with them years ago.

How about instead, I comment on the irony of someone spending their time and energy posting about how they don't care about the Oscars...essentially proving themselves wrong from the outset.

Rotten!

The Oscars have become absolutely useless. It's just out of touch hollywood patting themselves on the back instead of honoring those truly worthy like it used to be.

I honestly don't bother to watch the show anymore.

I don't care about the Oscars much yet every year I end up in front of the TV watching the show. It's like a sickness.

But yeah, I don't care what The Academy says. Unless they agree with me.

If you don't care, why did you care enough to make a thread about not caring?

I used to enjoy watching them with my mom when I was a kid, but now?! Sadly, I have found them quite boring. I tried watching them once 2 years ago. I did not recall one exciting event because I woke up on the couch the next morning greeted by the morning news program. That's how I feel about the Oscars now. As we age, our tastes change towards the quality of television , in addition, regarding Hollywood deciding what is good for the silver screen whle the writers and producers take a bdoloy siht on the caeprpr.

I care about them, but shit on a stick when shit like Little Miss Sunshine gets nominated for best picture, and that little troll gets nomitated for best actress or whatever from that movie, I get pissed and don't care to watch them.

I was just kind of wondering who else among GD hates them, as I stated in my original post. It was just a thought that stemmed from seeing a front page full of Oscar threads.

Yup, I'm right with you there. I will watch them this coming month so I can get a good night's sleep. I do not believe the Oscars are anywhere near the quality what they used to be back in the 70's and 80's. It's become more like the Capital Hill of Hollywood, and the MCs have run out of catchy and quotable punch lines. That's when I will be asleep on the couch in less than 10 minutes like 2 years ago.,

This is a good thread. I never put much thought into this until this topic started.

Yes I suppose I care enough about the whole thing to be frustrated by the proceedings. This is because I would like to see a ceremony that embraces daring and original works, instead of the predictable sap that always gets nominated as it is. I'm not against the whole idea of giving awards for the best filmmaking of the year (although I don't place as much emphasis on it as some). So I guess I should rephrase, I don't care about the outcome of the event or the show itself, because I would like to see it reformed. It's also aggravating how we get a lot of "Oscar-bait" films that mold themselves to fit a certain formula.

You guys are really nitpicking my wording here. You'd think I took a dump on some of your doorsteps. I mean no offense to anyone who enjoys the show.

I'll agree with you. I may care ever so slightly if an actor I really like get nominated...but just barely. I may pay attention to the ceremony a bit or watch for some of the celebs...but as for as the awards go, I really don't invest any emotion into them.

Don't ever expect daring and original from the Academy, wilson. It won't happen.

At the 1951 awards they gave best picture to "An American In Paris" over both "A Place In The Sun" and "A Streetcar Named Desire". An American In a Paris was a very entertaining and enjoyable musical but not in the same status as either of the other films.

People at the time say the Awards were more musical happy. It was after WWII and more musicals were being made. People believe that giving the award to An American In Paris was the politically correct thing to do. Not all people. But I've read about it and my neighbor (alive and kicking at the time) tells me about it when he was young and watched the awards in 1952.

I love Humphrey Bogart, but he got best actor over Marlon Brando (Streetcar) AND Montgomery Clift (A Place In The Sun).

At least they gave the right best actress Oscar that year to Vivien Leigh (Streetcar).

Don't get me started on the Shakespeare In Love travesty. Again, a perfectly nice harmless musical. Better than SPR or TTRL? Not by a longshot.

The Oscars don't care. They just want to appease as many people as they can with as little controversy as possible. Which is why they most likely picked Ellen to host this year.

They don't love Lynch. They don't love Dern. They just don't care.

Those little statues = millions of extra revenue and loads of free publicity for films that may not completely deserve it, all at the expense of the small independent/international fare that the Academy tends to ignore. Harmless? Not really.

I find the prediction process fun sometimes.
Don't really care about the awards themselves though, since the Academy never nominates films I actually like/love anymore.

Just curious, but what would the five best pictures of the year be on your roster? Personally, I don't have a top five because I haven't been all that impressed by anything I've seen this year. Call me jaded.
Well, there's a lot I haven't seen, but there were a few that I thought were great:

A Prairie Home Companion
The Fountain
Game 6

I think the Oscars, just like all other award shows, are fucking retarded. Its all a bunch of bullshit and the nominations are usually filled with a bunch of crappy films that most normal people haven't even heard of and wouldn't even want to see. his year's nominations are some of thw worst I have ever seen. The entire process is unwatchable and it's impossible to take any of them seriously.

What's even funnier is the reactions of the people who do watch it and take it seriously. How people get upset about a bunch of spoiled celebreties blowing each other is beyond me.

As I said in another thread, it's the same old bull every year. And it bugs me that dramas are generally considered the only films worthy of Best Picture.

I agree that they are too political and all, but if someone doesn't love Lynch???????? Thats no disqualfier. Lots of people can take some acid before work.....everyday and come out with something similar(slight exaggeration). He is kinda overrated among those who want to seem artsy.

I don't hate his movies but he is far from brilliant in my opinion. But whatever... I know someone who just told me they thought 'The Guardian' was a great movie. The Benchwarmers was good for a laugh.

Opinions are weird. I own Buffalo 66 and Royal Tenenbaums...I also own Day After Tomorrow. Stupid movie but for some odd reason I liked it

I do own Dune.

Thank you for saying that about Lynch. He makes the kind of films he wants to and he has a very small but loyal group of followers, but he hasn't done anything revolutionary that can put him in the category of "great".

He's a love him or hate him director, of which I fall into the "hate him" category. There are far better directors out there that deserve more recognition before Lynch.
