Arrow Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie

I thought this film was great and stuck true to the series. I'd like some thoughts on this film.

I thought it was a letdown compared to the series. I didn't like the villain or his sidekick and I really can't stand the "save the villain" cliche. I hate to bag on it because I'm a huuuuuuuuuge Bebop fan but I gotta be honest and say that it didn't send me.

I can see why some people didnt care for it, but I have to say that Vincent is a great villian. He's one of the few that have a good purpose for his actions and makes alot of sense most of the time. I do think that his sidekick is dumb though.

I don't care for mass-murderers in anime. I don't care for revenge against society for a single, personal grievance characters in anime, I don't like soooooo clever they can't be confounded and must be defeated at the very last second after they waltzed all over the main characters for the entire film/series characters in anime.

Bebop to me was about losers and futility and desperation and Vincent was just too pro and in control to match the tone of the show for my tastes. The movie was stiff to me and after you know who died, I wanted something lighter and fresher than your standard "ticking clock until millions die/fight to the death at the abandoned building 20 stories up" plot.

The whole point of a movie version of any series is to create something new. If the story would have stuck to "losers and futility and desperation" then it is nothing different, the same as a basic episode. With this they add more problems, characters, and actions. I say Vincent is a great villian because they have trouble standing up against him not only physically but mentally. He's not only bashing against society but his own personal agenda that he deals with.

Personally, I enjoyed the movie-- although it wasn't as good as the best of the best episodes, I thought it was much better than most anime or live action "action" movies I watch.

As for Vincent, he was sort of a blank slate, frankly, and I felt like they spent too much time trying to give every character their "scene" rather than focusing on telling a really good, in depth story. That was the main flaw, to me.

However, what I really liked was that, essentially, Vincent seemed to be a sort of "paralell" to Spike, and his actions and motivations really allowed a sort of mirror for Spike to look in to. When you place the movie in the time line of the show, it would have been considered fantastic, and totally essential to Spike's development and choices in the last few eps. People tend not to look at it in that way though, which is a shame. Also, I loved the theme of the butterflies, and what is truly "reality." Essentially, at the end of the TV show, Spike understands that he's been living as if in a dream all these years-- and that it's time to wake up, whatever the consequences. To me, the actions in this movie, and the butterfly motif, and the choices Vincent makes (while suffering much in the same way Spike is) really highlights Spike's later choices.

Seen in the fuller context of the arc of the show, the movie is excellent to me, for those reasons alone. Seen as a stand alone movie-- it's fun, and the action is very well directed, but the movie is a bit slow in parts, and not particularly "deep." It seems like it's more a matter of context, to me.

Thoughts, anyone?

Loved it. But I do think it was too long and they really lose the momentum towards the end. There are some awesome set pieces and fight scenes, and the music is just *oooh!*

Wow i thought I was the only one. I always thought a good pop in the mouth every once in a while would have done her some good.

And what's with her just walking off in the middle of nowhere in the series? Weren't they in the middle of a desert? And she just walks off with her gay backpack doing that stupid walk of hers. I like to think she got raped by burly mountain men that same day. Repeatedly.

I didn't think it was possible to hate Ed. She's practically the show's mascot.

Smile Is it Worth It?

Hey guys,

This is my first post,
Just asking is Cowboy Bebop The Movie worth buying, because i'm having trouble getting ahold of it anywhere in town but i can only get it over the internet, but at a ridiculous price. So is it worth the money? Alot of you have said its a letdown.. so maybe its not worth it.

Hey Vienna,
it seems we have a bit in common, I LOVE the Gorillaz and Cowboy bebop so we have two things. Do you like any of Damon Albarns other stuff. Maybe we have lotsa stuff in common.. What are your favourite movies or books?

I think it's just as great as the series. I also thought Vincent was a badass villian. Cool name, cool outfit, cool hair, & a good fighter. Though, I still think Vicious owns all Anime villians. The movie also had great music & like the series, both sub & english dubbed is great.

Cowboy Bebop is one of my favourite series but Vicious wasn't a good villain at all. The entire series only has a few episodes on the actual backstory or main plot and it's not enough to even care about Vicious, whether it's negative or positive. He simply wasn't interesting and was nothing more than some bad guy you find in other anime.
