Greg Dean Schmitz @ Rotten Tomatoes
Hey gang. My name is Greg Dean Schmitz, creator of a site called Upcomingmovies.com (since 1997), which was then published by Yahoo! Movies as Greg's Previews of Upcoming Movies, and which is now basically no longer active. In 2003, I was diagnosed with a rare blood disease, which had attacked several organs, leading to a whole pile of problems that made it difficult for me to keep up with the one man running of a site as comprehensive as Upcoming Movies.
About a month ago, however, I started as the new writer of a weekly column here at Rotten Tomatoes called "The Weekly Ketchup", which is basically a look at movie development news of the past week, with snarkiness and/or optimism. The column doesn't currently have a "home" on RT, so I thought it might make sense to start a thread that links to them. I guess it's also a good place besides the comments section for people to... talk about me ? So far, I've already heard from several people to let me know they are glad to see me back, writing about movies, which is really appreciated... thanks ! Here are the columns published so far (edited 5/31/08): 2/8: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wolf_man/news/1708109/ 2/15: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/wolverine/news/1709493/ 2/22: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_.../news/1710938/ 2/29: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/bour.../news/1712487/ 3/7: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/watchmen/news/1714281/ 3/14: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_.../news/1715543/ 3/21: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/1716824/ 3/28: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1009.../news/1718415/ 4/1: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/titanic/news/1718975/ 4/4: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/magn.../news/1719947/ 4/11: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/toy_.../news/1721692/ 4/18: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/just.../news/1723071/ 4/25: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1000.../news/1724331/ 5/2: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/iron_man/news/1725642/ 5/9: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/iron_man/news/1727292/ 5/16: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/atea.../news/1728781/ 5/23: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1007.../news/1730327/ 5/30: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/beve.../news/1731735/ 6/6:http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dark...olmes_and_more 6/13: Reposted later in this thread 6/20:http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/1..._role_and_more 6/27, 7/4 and 7/11: Reposted in posts later on in this thread 7/18:http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_...tchmen_trailer Guest Column (5/22/08) 20 Sequels We're Still Waiting For: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/indi.../news/1730096/ Guest Column (7/24/08) Watching the Watchmen (Trailer): http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/watc...ailer_analysis You can also contact me via my MySpace page: http://www.myspace.com/gregdean88 Greg Dean Schmitz Last edited by greg_dean_schmitz; 07-24-2008 at 06:44 PM. |

Hey Greg. I was a faithful reader of Greg's Previews back in the day on Yahoo. I'm sorry to hear that you're still having health problems.

Hi Greg. Big reader of Upcoming Previews since about 2000. I even remember reading about such upcoming movies as Gladiator and Minority Report. Sorry to here you had health problems. Hope your doing better. I loved the site and its how I kept up my movie news. It was the first of its kind wasn’t it? I also enjoy your RT columns.

The differences I always saw between UCMC and Corona was that a) UCMC had more commentary for each specific movie and b) UCMC tried to cover all movie genres, not just "eye candy" stuff like sci-fi, fantasy, etc (though I obviously enjoy eye candy movies a lot too). So... yeah, I guess UCMC was the first of its kind in that way. gds |

Oh man, do I ever miss Corona Coming Attractions...it was one of my favourite movie sites back in the day. No other movie site has come close to its comprehensive coverage of films, from the original ideas of a film, to it finally being in the can.

This week's "Weekly Ketchup" column was actually supposed to be considerably longer... I don't know why only a portion of it ended up online, but here for your enjoyment is the REST of the piece...
****************************************** IT'S BONE, BONE, IT'S BETTER THAN BAD, IT'S GOOD Earlier this decade, comic book artist Jeff Smith's "Bone" nearly got made by Nickelodeon/Paramount in a development tango that lasted several years, providing news movies sites with regular bits of news a few times a year (check my old site, Greg's Previews, for some history: http://movies.yahoo.com/movie/preview/1808403246 ), and then, the whole deal was called off, and it looked like the idea of a "Bone" movie was dead. This week, however, Warner Bros has stepped up to try again, this time apparently not with a pre-set idea about how exactly to adapt Smith's sprawling epic about two little white brothers adventuring through magical lands (CGI versus live-action, etc). According to the Hollywood Reporter, the dispute with Nickelodeon was over their desire to make it a kids-centered movie filled with pop songs and such. The Warner Bros-based producer working on "Bone" is the same that is also working on potentially big budget adaptations like "Thundercats", "Masters of the Universe" and Terry Brooks' classic fantasy novel, "The Sword of Shannara." http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...70a339aef45dd6 MONSTERS VS ALIENS VS CELEBRITY VOICE OVERS Dreamworks unveiled the first image from, and the voice cast for, one of their big CGI movies for 2009, "Monsters vs Aliens." Reese Witherspoon stars as a girl who gets enlarged to 50 feet tall by an alien rock, making her a "monster" according to the government (led by Steven Colbert), and teaming her up with lots of other monsters the government has kept imprisoned, who are then enlisted to protect Earth from a big, bad alien invader. Other celebrities providing voices are Seth Rogan, Paul Rudd, Rainn Wilson, Will Arnett and Kiefer Sutherland. "Monsters vs Aliens" will be presented in 3-D, and has a visual look that's somewhere in between "The Incredibles" and "Monsters, Inc", but hey, that's also just one image. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mons.../news/1668080/ RACE TO A FRANCHISE FROM THE 70s NO ONE REMEMBERS "Race to Witch Mountain", Disney's attempt to revive a live-action franchise from the 70s that people who were actually kids then (like me) barely remember starts filming soon, with more cast announced this week. The movie is not a sequel, but a reimagination of the basic concept of human-looking alien kids in jeopardy of the series that started with "Escape to..." in 1975, and was followed by "Return from..." in 1978 and "Beyond..." in 1982. This time, the story will follows the adventures of a Las Vegas cab driver (Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson) who ends up taking two strange young kids with amazing powers to the mysterious Witch Mountain, where they hope to contact their alien relatives and convince them not to blow up Earth (basically a variation on the theme of the upcoming "Day the Earth Stood Still" remake, starring Keanu Reeves). Ciaran Hinds ("Rome") plays the leader of a gang of bad guys who want to exploit the kids' amazing abilities, Carla Gugino ("Spy Kids") plays an UFO expert, and the film is directed by Andy Fickman, who previously directed "The Rock" playing with kids in "The Game Plan." Disney has scheduled "Race to Witch Mountain" . http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...86b80f61cb8ea0 THIS WEEK IN APATOWDOM The actors, writers and assorted friends that make up movies directed or produced by Judd Apatow are becoming their own little mini-industry within the film business, with people like Seth Rogan and Jonah Hill becoming increasingly ubiquitous. So, this week, that assorted bunch gets its own paragraph, representing two movies. First, there is Apatow's next project as director, which will costar Adam Sandler, Seth Rogen and Apatow's wife, Leslie Mann, who is sort of becoming his own personal Rebecca Pidgeon. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/news/1657010/ Second is a somewhat more bizarre announcement, in the news that two of the guys starring in the obviously, frequently profane "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" are going to be involved in reviving the Muppets in feature film form after working with the Jim Henson Company on elements of the aforementioned dirty, dirty Kirsten Bell movie. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mupp.../news/1672530/ A REDEMPTION SONG... IS ALL I EVER HAD Martin Scorcese recently announced his plans to produce a feature film documentary about the life of reggae legend Bob Marley a while back, with plans for a release around the February 6th date in 2010 when Marley would have 2010, but his project will now have a dramatic counterpart, with the Weinstein Company producing an adaptation of Rita Marley's autobiography, "No Woman, No Cry." The project has no director or lead yet, and just a script from a relative unknown writer (Lizzie Borden), but with Mrs. Marley's cooperation and support, it seems likely this project will get underway soon, with the Weinstein's aiming for a fall, 2009 release. http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=13&cs=1 FOLLOW THE YELLOW BRICK ROAD... TO BAGHDAD "Bourne" series collaborators, director Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon, are currently teaming up again on a dramatic/thriller interpretation of the non-fiction book, "Imperial Life in the Emerald City: Inside Iraq's Green Zone", which I've heard is currently untitled, but some sources list as "Green Zone." The ensemble cast stars Matt Damon as a CIA operative searching for WMDs, and includes Amy Ryan as a New York Times reporter also looking for said weapons, Greg Kinnear as one of Damon's CIA coworkers and many others, including two "Harry Potter" actors (Jason Isaacs and Brendan Gleeson) and several Middle Eastern actors. With characters on both sides of the "green zone", it sounds like this might be a "Traffic"-style look at American operations in Iraq. If "Traffic" had an unusual amount of Harry Potter regulars, I suppose. SHAKING THE REST OF THE KETCHUP OUT *"Juno" director Jason Reitman has lined up his next project, "Pierre Pierre", which will star Jim Carrey as a French nihilist escorting a stole painting from France to England. Images of Jim Carrey trying his best French impersonations... tres terribles? http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=13&cs=1 *David Gordon Green, who is known for a series of small, intimate independent movies ("All the Real Girls", "Undertow") may be making a step up to "genre movies", with word from MTV that he is working on the script for a "Suspiria" remake, which he would also direct. ( http://moviesblog.mtv.com/2008/03/05...spiria-remake/ ) I find the exact plot of "Suspiria" difficult to summarize briefly, but it's basically a horror movie set in an all girl's school where many of the students actually belong to a witch's coven. Imagine "The Craft", but Italian, in the 1970s and actually scary instead of "ironically" scary. Now imagine that being redone by David Gordon Green. *"Notorious", the biopic about rapper Notorious B.I.G. has found its leading man in Brooklyn native, and relative unknown, Jamal Woodard. "Notorious" is scheduled for January 16th, 2009 and costars Angela Bassett as B.I.G.'s mother, Derek Luke ("Antwone Fisher") as Sean "Puffy" Combs and Anthony Mackie ("She Hate Me") as Tupac Shakur. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/1000.../news/1713749/ *Several images from a location shoot for "Wolfman" appeared online, featuring Benicio del Toro looking extremely bloody in torn clothes, and Sir Anthony Hopkins looking... old and bearded. I think it's probably a good bet that the blood does not belong to del Toro's character, and what we're seeing is him the morning after some rigorous wolfin' out. http://bauergriffinonline.com/2008/0...f-in-londo.php *Sam Raimi has inked a deal with Paramount to develop/produce an adaptation of the upcoming Douglas TenNapel graphic novel, "Monster Zoo", about a boy who discovers that his local zoo has unusual creatures beyond the usual menagerie. It sounds a bit like "The Spiderwick Chronicles", maybe? http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...monster+zoo%22 *Willow and Jaden Smith, having costarred with their dad in "I Am Legend" and "The Pursuit of Happyness", respectively, have signed with Warner Bros to costar together in "Amulet", an adaptation of a manga series, as two siblings who must use a magical amulet to save their mother from a magical beast in a magical underworld... magically. http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117982400.html *Remember that news a week or two ago that Ellen Page had been cast as the lead in Sam Raimi's return to horror, "Drag Me to Hell"? Well, she dropped out, and has been replaced by Alison Lohman as the unlucky recipient of a supernatural curse. Page has the recent "buzz" going for her, but Alison Lohman was really good (IMO) a few years ago in "Matchstick Men" and is probably just one prime role from herself getting some of her own "buzz". Justin Long ("Live Free or Die Hard", the "Mac Guy" in Apple ads) has also signed on to play Lohman's boyfriend. *Casting of the remake of Wes Craven's remake of "Last House on the Left" is underway, with the parents to be played by Tony Goldwyn and Monica Potter. The plot is apparently being changed around a bit, but in the original, the parents really took center stage in the disturbing final act, so their casting is "kinda" important. I'm not sure what to make of Goldwyn and Potter in those roles. (http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=13&cs=1) *Casting is underway for "Max Payne", the videogame adaptation from director John Moore, whose last two movies were remakes of "The Omen" and "Flight of the Phoenix," both for 20th Century Fox, which is handling "Max Payne" as well. Mark Wahlberg has been signed on for a while to star as the title character, a framed cop, and Mila Kunis ("That 70s Show") has now joined him as an assassin who teams up with Payne to avenge her sister's death. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/forg.../news/1657368/ *Columbia/Sony is currently working on finding a writer for a "Metal Gear Solid" videogame adaptation, with Kurt Wimmer ("Equilibrium", "Ultraviolet") on their short list. http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=42924 *No cast has been announced yet, but director Mike Newell ("Donnie Brasco", "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire") is busy scouting locations for Disney's videogame adaptation, "Prince of Persia: Sands of Time" in Morocco, which would be standing in for Persia, as a better candidate for a Hollywood production to start in June, 2008 than where Persia really used to be (still is), AKA Iran. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/prin.../news/1656083/ *Location scouting for "Transformers 2" is underway in Detroit and Philadelphia, preparing for filming to start in June. http://www.comics2film.com/index.php?a=story&b=31919 *20th Century Fox may be considering making a third "Aliens vs Predator" movie. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/alie.../news/1657796/ *Luke Ford and Maria Bello, who are joining Brendan Fraser for the third "Mummy" movie this summer, have revealed that they are both signed for a trilogy of sequels, which would bring the total of "Mummy" movies to six if they all got made. Bello teased that the fourth movie might be set in the Amazon. Sounds like someone's seen commercials for "The Ruins." http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/mumm.../news/1668024/ *After making statements that suggested he didn't plan on doing a "Rambo 5", according to AICN, Sylvester Stallone is now... halfway through a script for "Rambo 5", although he teases that this entry will change up the genre a bit. Here's hoping it's a zombie flick. http://www.aintitcool.com/node/35972 *Warner Bros. announced plans this week to split the final "Harry Potter" book into two movies, with the same director as movie #6 (David Yates, who has mostly done TV stuff for the BBC), so that the last three movies will all be directed by him, with "Half-Blood Prince" coming out this November 21st, the first half of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows" coming out in November, 2010, followed by the final film in May, 2011. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/harr.../news/1672513/ * When the release date for the live-action Dragonball movie was announced, it nearly had August, 2008 to itself. Many other studios' movies (including Star Wars: Clone Wars and Tropic Thunder) were apparently unafraid of challenging the "Z", so 20th Century Fox has pushed the movie back (WAY back), until April 3rd, 2009. Now, let's see what happens when several movies get slotted for that date as well. ( http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/drag.../news/1660816/ ) *If you believe in the notion that the best candidates for remakes are movies that were flawed the first time around, then the news that someone is trying to get an "Attack of the Killer Tomatoes" remake going isn't as necessarily as abominable as the five or six other remake plans that you hear about in a given week. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/atta.../news/1714700/ *Producer Wendy Finerman ("The Devil Wears Prada") announced plans this week to adapt "8 Simple Rules for Marrying My Daughter", the sequel book by author W. Bruce Cameron to the book that inspired the John Ritter-starring TV series, "8 Simple Rules (for Dating My Teenage Daughter)." It sounds likely that the cast will be entirely different from the TV show, although it would be kind of cool (in my opinion) if they could throw James Garner some work as the Ritter character's father. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/8_si.../news/1655956/ *Charlize Theron has been talking to press this week about possibly starring in a remake of the 2005 Korean female revenge movie, "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance." http://chud.com/articles/articles/13...RON/Page1.html *A new production company called The Film Department announced their acquisition this week from a new screenwriter of a project called "Galahad", spinning a revisionist take on the King Arthur legends, with Arthur and Guinevere being cowardly and/or villainous, and the heroic focus instead being on Sir Galahad. Michael Palin may have spoiled the character for me forever in "Monty Python and the Holy Grail", so admittedly, my actual knowledge of who Galahad is supposed to be is now a little twisted, ripe for "revisionism", I guess. http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/hr/...b9ecf58da4d823 * Pras (Michel) from the Fugees is following up producing the upcoming "Mutant Chronicles" with what he hopes will be a trilogy of movies based on the "Dark Oz" comic books, which as you might guess, retell the stories of L. Frank Baum's Oz books in a darker, more modern tone. This was, of course, recently done with the "Tinman" mini-series on Sci-Fi. http://www.variety.com/article/VR111...goryid=13&cs=1 ) *Edward Norton's Class 5 Films has stepped up to produce an already-filming documentary about Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign. http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_.../news/1671694/ *The official site for "Punisher: War Zone" is now online (http://www.punishermovie.com). Starring Ray Stevenson (Titus Pollo from HBO's "Rome"), this third movie is restarting the story once again, promising the truest adaptation yet to the comic book source material, and a lot more violence, I'm hearing.
