Robert Ellis had a brief but varied career in films having worked as a leading man, director, and art director. Prior to his 1919 screen debut, Ellis spent many years acting on stage. As a film actor, Ellis was a popular leading man who worked in both silents and early talkies. He began directing films for Selznick in the early '20s.
