When he was a young boy, his mother worked with puppets, masks and acted as a member of Cannon Hill Theatre, based at Midlands Art Centre. His father used to play electric organ for bands such as Fine Young Cannibals and UB40. Formed an indie rock band, Edmund, named after Edmund Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia when he was a teenager. Created his own theatre company called Fuego with his friend Richard Morgan in 2002. Recorded his own version of "Let It Go" from Frozen on the BBC Radio 1 show, singing how he was no longer in Doctor Who. Nominated for Most Promising Newcomer in the Evening Standard Theatre Awards in 2007. As a musician and composer, wrote the music for stage shows including Artefacts by Mike Bartlett in 2007 and The Frontline by Che Walker in 2008. Voted Best Supporting Actor by readers of Doctor Who magazine for his work in the 2010 season. Performed the lead role of Guy in the Broadway musical Once in 2013, and later performed the same role in the West End production. Was part of a group of celebrities who designed cards for children's charity Coram, helping to raise 8,500 after they were sold on eBay.
