Worked as an extra in the Metropolitan Opera chorus, where he met weightlifter John Davis, the subject of his first film (The Strongest Man in the World). Was inducted into the U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame in 2004. Has won eight Emmys and received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Sports Emmys in 2006. Has a scholarship endowed by the USOC in his name at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts.
