Was "discovered" at age 14 while riding horses in Miami; went on to be one of the top models of the 1990s alongside Cindy Crawford and Naomi Campbell. Is the face used for the 120 mannequins that became part of the Costume Institute galleries of New York's Museum of Modern Art. Mannequin artist Ralph Rucci felt that Turlington's features transcended both gender and time. Made her directorial debut in the documentary No Woman, No Cry, which examines at-risk pregnancies in different parts of the world, including the US, Tanzania, Bangladesh and Guatemala. Was inspired to become involved in maternal-health issues during a trip to El Salvador during her second pregnancy; founded the advocacy group Every Mother Counts to further her cause. At 31, was diagnosed with early-stage emphysema. She had quit her pack-a-day cigarette habit and become an antismoking advocate just three years earlier. Her sister Kelly is married to husband Edward Burns' brother Brian.
