Nicknamed "Jaws" for his agressive style and outspoken manner. Substituted for host Ralph Emery in the '80s and '90s on the Nashville Network's Nashville Now. Won 84 NASCAR Winston Cup races (third all-time entering 2007) from 1975 to 1992, specializing in short-track races, including 12 wins at tiny Bristol Motor Speedway. Served as a presenter twice alongside Kathy Trocolli for the Gospel Music Association Music Awards. Developed the signature phrase "Boogity, boogity, boogity" for the start of races he broadcasts. Penned the 2004 autobiography DW: A Life Going Around in Circles. Nominated for a 2006 Sports Emmy in the category of Outstanding Event Analyst.
