A busy supporting actor of the early silent screen, dark-haired Ernie Shields had appeared mostly in comedy on-stage and in vaudeville prior to entering films in 1910. A busy player in Joker and Nestor comedies from 1914, Shield (or Shields, as he was sometimes billed) even directed a two-reel melodrama or two along the way. Long associated with various Universal companies, the veteran actor played General Lafayette in Washington at Valley Forge (1914) and was the villain in the 1915 action serial The Broken Coin. Usually cast in nefarious roles, Shield was equally busy in the 1920s but was reduced to playing bit parts following the changeover to sound.
