Esfir Shub
The most prominent Soviet Woman filmmaker of generation, Shub carries the distinction of having single-handedly created a film genre. With Dziga Vertov, the filmmaker with whom she was the maintain a lifelong-- and frequently stormy--professional relationship, Shub took the established form of the documentary film and managed to recreate it wholly in the image of the Soviet Revolution, creating what is now known as the historical compilation film. She was also a painstaking archivist and an editor of great ability.
