Hermann Goring was born in Marienbad, Bavaria on January 12, 1893. DuringWWI he was first enlisted into the Prussian army, but was latertransferred to the air force. By 1915 he became a fighter pilot and shotdown over five British, Austrailian, and French planes. He was later shotdown and had spent time recovering. During the Nazi era, he was appointedhead of the entire Luftwaffe air force. On October 15, 1946, just two hours before the former Reichsmarshall was to face the hangman to pay for his war crimes, the 53-year-old Hermann Göring committed suicide in his jail cell by taking poison that he somehow had smuggled in with him.
