Born in Puerto Rico and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Javier Grillo-Marxuach is probably best known for his work on "Lost" from 2004 to 2006, the first two seasons of the hit show. He is a lifelong lover of science-fiction and fantasy, and most of his writing and producing work in television has had a distinctive fantastical tone to it, whether the deep sea sci-fi adventure show "SeaQuest 2032" or the paranormal mystery series "Medium," which also had a strong sense of realist drama in its family sequences. His first work sold to a studio was a pilot called "The Van Helsing Chronicles," though it failed to get picked up by the commissioning studio NBC. "Future Tense," a science-fiction pilot, was picked up by NBC but the show did not materialize past the pilot stage. Much more successful were his stints on shows "Charmed," "Boomtown" (a rare non-fantastical job), and "Jake 2.0." In the summer of 2008, the show "The Middleman" aired, created by Grillo-Marxuach and based on his comic book of the same name. The show was not renewed for a second season, though a cult fan base has built up around it.
