American actress Jennifer Grey grew up among the sort of people who'd be her co-workers later in life. She was the granddaughter of comedian Mickey Katz and the daughter of Broadway star Joel Grey and actress Jo Wilder. Childhood dance lessons helped her get a start dancing in television commercials. After spending time with the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater in New York, Grey appeared in the off-Broadway production Album. More theatrical experience followed. Grey made her screen debut in the 10th-billed role of Cathy Bennario in the 1984 romantic drama Reckless. That year, she also played small roles in The Cotton Club and Red Dawn. Her first real break came when she played Matthew Broderick's sister in the hit teen comedy Ferris Bueller's Day Off (1986). Grey followed up that success with an even bigger one starring opposite Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing (87): coincidentally, the film was set in a Catskill Mountains resort, the same kind of establishment where Grey's father and grandfather began their careers. Though her performance won her accolades, Grey subsequently experienced the all too common difficulty that many teen actors faced, attempting to enter the ream of adult acting. She would appear in a handful of films like Bloodhounds of Broadway (1989) and Portraits of a Killer (1996), before finding her footing with films like Bounce and Redbelt, as well as TV series like It's Like You Know, John from Cincinnati, and The New Adventures of Old Christine.

QUOTES FROM Jennifer Grey CHARACTERS

Johnny Castle says: I'll never be sorry.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Neither will I.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Oh, yes, as a matter of fact it is. We're supposed to do the show in two days, you won't show me the lifts, I'm not sure of the turns, I'm doin' all this to save your ass, what I really wanna do is drop you on it!

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: So I did it for nothing. I hurt my family, you lost your job anyway, I did it for *nothing*!

Johnny Castle says: No, no, not for nothin', Baby! Nobody has ever done anything like that for me before.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: You were right, Johnny. You can't win no matter what you do!

Johnny Castle says: You listen to me. I don't wanna hear that from you. *You* can!

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: [pause] I used to think so.

Lisa Houseman says: Oh, my God. Look at that! Ma, I should have brought those coral shoes. You said I was taking too much!

Marjorie Houseman says: Well, sweetheart, you brought ten pairs.

Lisa Houseman says: But the coral shoes match that dress!

Dr. Jake Houseman says: This is not a tragedy. A tragedy is three men trapped in a mine, or police dogs used in Birmingham.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Monks burning themselves in protest.

Lisa Houseman says: Butt out, Baby.

Max Kellerman says: Max, our Baby's gonna change the world.

Max Kellerman says: [to Lisa] And what are you gonna do, missy?

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Oh, Lisa's going to decorate it.

Robbie Gould says: She already does.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Oh, yes, as a matter of fact it is. We're supposed to do the show in two days, you won't show me the lifts, I'm not sure of the turns, I'm doing all this to save your ass, what I really want to do is drop you on it!

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: You make me sick. Stay away from me, stay away from my sister or I'll have you fired.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Sorry for the interruption, folks, but I always do the last dance of the season. This year somebody told me not to. So I'm gonna do my kind of dancin' with a great partner, who's not only a terrific dancer, but somebody... who's taught me... that there are people willing to stand up for other people no matter what it costs them. Somebody who's taught me about the kind of person I wanna be. Miss Frances Houseman.

Johnny Castle says: No, no. Look, you've gotta understand what it's like, Baby. You come from the streets and suddenly you're up here, and these women, they are throwing themselves at ya, and they smell so good, and they really take care of themselves. I mean, I never knew women could be like that, you know? And they're so rich, they're so goddam rich, you think they must know about everything. And they're slipping their room keys in my hands, two and three times day, different women. So, here I think I'm scoring big, right? And for a while, you think, hey, they wouldn't be doing this if they didn't care about me, right?

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: That-that's alright, I understand. You were just using them, that's all.

Johnny Castle says: No, no that's not it. That's the thing, Baby, see it wasn't like that. They were using me.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: That was the summer of 1963 - when everybody called me Baby, and it didn't occur to me to mind. That was before President Kennedy was shot, before the Beatles came, when I couldn't wait to join the Peace Corps, and I thought I'd never find a guy as great as my dad. That was the summer we went to Kellerman's.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Me?. I'm scared of everything. I'm scared of what I saw, I'm scared of what I did, about who I am and most of all I'm scared of walkin' out of this and never feelin' the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: I carried a watermelon.

Johnny Castle says: What's your name, Baby.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Frances. The first woman in the cabinet.

Johnny Castle says: Frances, that's a grown-up name.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Me? I'm scared of everything! I'm scared of what I saw; I'm scared of what I did, of who I am! And most of all I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you.

Frances "Baby" Houseman says: Me? I'm scared of everything. I'm scared of what I saw, I'm scared of what I did, of who I am, and most of all I'm scared of walking out of this room and never feeling the rest of my whole life the way I feel when I'm with you.
