Son of a Brooklyn longshoreman. Chairman of Interscope/Geffen/A&M Records. Started in the music biz as a recording engineer in the 1970s with such artists as John Lennon, Bruce Springsteen and Meat Loaf. Produced Patti Smith's classic 1978 album Easter and went on to helm albums by Tom Petty, Stevie Nicks, Bob Seger, Dire Straits, U2 and the Pretenders. Founded Interscope Records in 1989. Partnered with Death Row Records to release albums by Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Introduced Dr. Dre to an unsigned rapper named Eminem. Oversaw Interscope's work with No Doubt, Limp Bizkit and Nine Inch Nails, among others.
