The idea for Harry Potter popped into her head while on a crowded, delayed train from Manchester to London in 1990. The seven years from 1990 saw the death of her mother, the birth of her first child, divorce from her first husband, and relative poverty until the first novel in the series, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, was published in 1997. Was advised by her publisher that boys would not read books by a woman, so she adopted her middle initial "K" from the name of her favourite grandparent, Kathleen. First daughter, Jessica, is named after Rowling's childhood heroine, the activist Jessica Mitford. Prefers to write in longhand. Awarded as an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Queen Elizabeth II in 2001. Became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh (HonFRSE) and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature (FRSL) in 2002. In less than 10 years, went from a struggling writer to Forbes magazine's list of billionaires, a feat attained in 2004. Was runner-up as Time magazine's 2007 Person of the Year, for the social, moral and political inspiration she has given her fans. Became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (FRCPE) in 2011 for services to Literature and Philanthropy. Announced her first novel for adults, The Casual Vacancy, in 2012. Very active in many charities, including research for multiple sclerosis, from which her mother died in 1990 at age 45. Lost her billionaire status after giving away much of her wealth to charity but remains one of the wealthiest people in the world. Is the UK's best-selling living author, with sales in excess of 238 million. Named a Companion of the Order of the Companions of Honour in the Queen's 2017 Birthday Honours. Has supported many charities including Comic Relief and One Parent Families and launched her own charity, Lumos, to promote an end to the institutionalisation of children.
