Documentary filmmaker Junichi Ushiyama made films about subjects ranging from travel to ethnographic studies to social commentaries. He seemed particularly fascinated with the behavior of the Japanese army during WWII as can be seen in films such as 160,00 Young Lives Lost in New Guinea, a haunting piece about how Japanese generals ordered the abandonment of the country's army in New Guinea after the strategists made miscalculations. One of his last films concerned the massacre of Japanese women and children who in the last days of the war, tried to escape Manchuria. Ushiyama died of liver disease on October 6, 1997.
