In his early days, McDaniel toured the world with the Alvin Ailey Dance Theater's junior company. After establishing himself on Broadway, McDaniel moved to Los Angeles. He made his feature-film debut in the Bette Midler weeper Beaches (1982). Other film credits include Basic Instinct and Death Becomes Her (1992).
