He began his professional career in 1997, writing an episode of the series "Lawless," which he followed by writing the screenplay for the John Woo film "The Replacement Killers" a year later. That same year Sanzel wrote and directed the crime thriller "Scar City," which starred Stephen Baldwin and later wrote the film "Dodge City" in 1999. In 2002 Sanzel wrote and directed the mythical Western film "Lone Hero," which starred Lou Diamond Phillips in the lead role. In 2005 he began work on the CBS hit series "Numbers," starring Rob Morrow. Sanzel began working as an executive producer on the show a year later and in 2009 he directed four episodes of the show. In 2010 he directed, wrote, and produced the TV adventure series "Nomads." That same year he was handpicked by CBS to executive the cop themed series "Blue Bloods."
