First appeared in Shikari (1946), a film in which his brother Ashok played the lead role. A record eight-time winner of the Filmfare Best Playback Singer Award. Received a record total of 27 nominations for the award, four alone in 1985, when he was the sole nominee. Took inspiration for his singing from K. L. Saigal, whose style he emulated in his early days. Known for his erratic behaviour, he said in an interview that that he had no friends, but spoke to trees instead.
