German director Konrad Wolf, born in Hechingen, the son of playwright Friedrich Wolf, was only a boy when his family fled to Russia after the Nazi takeover in 1933. He served with the Red Army during WWII. Afterward he began studying filmmaking under such noted directors as Sergei Gerasimov and Grigori Alexandrov in Moscow. In 1954, Wolf moved to East Germany. Regarded as one of the former country's premiere directors, his most famous film in the West was Sterne (Stars) (1959). In 1965, he was appointed the president of the Academy of Arts of the German Democratic Republic.
