Received his first drum kit from his sister Cecilia in 1973. Played drums with the Artane Boys Band, a Dublin marching band, as a youth. Placed an ad for musicians on a bulletin board at his high school: Singer-guitarist Paul Hewson (Bono), guitarist Dave Evans (The Edge) and bassist Adam Clayton were among those who responded. Worked for oil company Seiscom Delta in Dublin after finishing high school and prior to U2 taking off. Along with Clayton, recorded the "Theme From Mission: Impossible" for the 1996 Tom Cruise film. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, as a member of U2, in 2005. Has recorded with Nanci Griffith, Emmylou Harris, B.B. King, Daniel Lanois, Robbie Robertson and R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and Mike Mills, among others.
