  • Best known as the late singer of Alice in Chains, a band he cofounded with Jerry Cantrell in 1987. Played drums in high school before becoming a vocalist. Helped forge two super-groups, Mad Season, which featured members of Pearl Jam and Screaming Trees; and Class of '99, with musicians from Rage Against the Machine, Jane's Addiction and Porno for Pyros. After he died of a drug overdose, his mother, Nancy McCallum, and Jamie Richards of Emerald City Musician's Network cofounded the Layne Staley Fund, a nonprofit organization benefiting substance-abuse programs. His life and death are chronicled in the 2003 Adriana Rubio biography Layne Staley: Angry Chair. His death influenced music written by Metallica for their 2008 album Death Magnetic.
