A victim of a fad that also gave the world Blanche Sweet, Bessie Love, and Arline Pretty, Australian-born Louise Lovely (née Carbasse) appeared in early Universal programmers opposite a young Lon Chaney. Freelancing after leaving Universal, Lovely found perhaps her greatest popularity at Fox in 1919, starring opposite William Farnum -- then the highest paid actor in films -- in such outdoor adventures as The Lone Star Ranger, The Last of the Duanes, and in 1920's The Orphan. Also in 1920, Louise was aviator Ormer Locklear's leading lady in The Skywayman, the action melodrama that cost the lives of both Locklear and his co-pilot Milton "Skeets" Elliott. Eerily, the fatal accident was left in the released version of the film, which, unfortunately, seems to have been lost. Belonging thoroughly to the 1910s, Louise Lovely retired after Shattered Idols (1922), a romantic drama starring Marguerite de la Motte. ~ Hans J. Wollstein, Rovi
