Cites novelist Flannery O'Connor as a major influence on her songwriting. Achieved critical and commercial success with 1998's Grammy-winning album Wheels on a Gravel Road. Has opened for Bob Dylan and Van Morrison. Was named America's Best Songwriter by Time magazine in 2001. Involved with the Half the Sky Movement, which is dedicated to ending the oppression of women and girls worldwide.
