Started racing go-karts at age 10, and began racing sports cars competitively in 1980. Joined the IndyCar circuit in 1983 and was named co-Rookie of the Year. Won his first IndyCar race in 1986, and won the IndyCar World Series in 1991. Was a teammate of his father Mario from 1989 to 1992. When he completed his CART career in 2002, he was third all-time in series victories behind A.J. Foyt and his father. In 2003 bought a share of the Andretti Green Racing team, which later became the successful Andretti Autosports team. Was selected for the Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2008 and the Long Beach Grand Prix Walk of Fame in 2010.
