Nina Foch's parents were Dutch composer/conductor Dirk Fock and American show girl and actress Consuelo Flowerton, a famous World War I pin-up girl. Foch was raised in Manhattan; in her teens she was a concert pianist and amateur painter. After studying acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts she appeared with little theater groups, in stock, and with touring companies; very soon she signed a contract with Columbia, debuting onscreen in Return of the Vampire (1943). Her early career was marred by low-quality films, but gradually her screen presence and talent helped her land better roles. In 1947 she debuted on Broadway; ultimately she appeared onstage in several Shakespeare productions. For more than a decade she sustained a fairly busy film career, usually playing chic, cool, aloof, sophisticated women who were often fragile and occasionally neurotic. For her work in Executive Suite (1954) Foch received a "Best Supporting Actress" Oscar nomination. She appeared in few films after 1960. Foch has appeared in many TV productions, and was John Houseman's assistant on the TV special A Night At Ford's Theater. She also continued performing onstage; in 1967 she directed the play Ways and Means. Among her other directing credits, she was associate director of George Stevens' The Diary of Anne Frank (1959). More recently, Nina Foch has become one of Hollywood's most respected drama coaches.
