Was the lead singer, songwriter and rhythm guitarist for New Wave pioneers the Cars, who released six albums during their 1976 to '88 run. Made his solo debut with the album Beatitude, released by Geffen Records in 1982. Met wife Paulina Porizkova in 1984, when she starred in the Cars' video for their smash single "Drive." Had a bit part in the 1987 film Made in Heaven and a cameo in the original Hairspray (1988). Declined to participate when some members of his old group reunited in 2006 as the New Cars, but gave permission for Todd Rundgren to replace him as front man. Has produced albums for a number of prominent rock acts, including Bad Brains, Bad Religion, Guided by Voices and Weezer.
