A documentary cameraman whose experience on such nonfiction features as Hype! and Scratch the Surface eventually led to work on such films as Slums of Beverly Hills, Robert Bennett maintained a frequent working relationship with filmmaker Doug Pray -- whom the talented cinematographer would team up with for such efforts as the aforementioned grunge study Hype!, Scratch, and Red Diaper Baby. The New York City native attended Colorado College before relocating to the West Coast in 1987 to attend the American Film Institute, and it wasn't long before he made the acquaintance of filmmaker Pray. As the like-minded filmmakers continued to collaborate throughout the later half of the 1990s, Bennett also stepped behind the camera for such efforts as Albert and Allan Hughes' American Pimp. On March 19, 2004, Robert Bennett lapsed into a coma, eventually dying of a brain hemorrhage shortly thereafter. He was 44.
