Influences include Elvis Presley, Mick Jagger and Eric Clapton. Nicknamed "the Red Rocker." Lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the influential early-1970s hard-rock band Montrose. Solo hits include "Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy" (1983), "I Can't Drive 55" (1984) and "Give to Love" (1987).  Joined Van Halen as lead singer in 1985, helping the band score four No. 1 and five multiplatinum albums over the next decade. Founded the Cabo Wabo Cantina nightclub and restaurant in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, in 1990; has since opened similar venues in Las Vegas and Lake Tahoe, as well as launching Cabo Wabo premium tequila. Inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Van Halen in 2007.  Partnered with Host International to create the Sammy's Beach Bar and Grill airport-based restaurant chain; he donates a portion of the profits to children's charities. Published a memoir, Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock, in 2011. Formed the hard-rock supergroup Chickenfoot in 2008 with guitar great Joe Satriani, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith after the foursome engaged in impromptu jams at the Cabo Wabo Cantina.  Hobbies include collecting cars, mountain biking and cooking.
