Was involved with television at University taking part in Glasgow University Student Television. Worked as a teacher at Cowdenknowes High School in Greenock, Scotland. Created the show Press Gang in 1989 after his father, who was headteacher of a school where Harry Secombe's Highway was being filmed, pitched the idea of the show to the producers. Wrote a spoof of Doctor Who for Children In Need in 2013. Appointed an OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) by Queen Elizabeth II in her 2015 Birthday Honours. Wrote a special episode of "Doctor Who" to mark the programme's 50th annversary, which was shown in November 2013. Was replaced as writer of "Doctor Who" by "Broadchurch" writer, Chris Chibnall, in 2017.
