Was adopted as a child. Began performing while at Oxford in a group called The Seven Raymonds, with Richard Herring and Emma Kennedy, among others. Won the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year award in 1990. Published his first novel, The Perfect Fool, in 2001. Co-wrote and co-directed the musical Jerry Springer: The Opera, which premiered at the National Theatre in London in 2003. Supporter of the British Humanist Association. An Honorary Associate of the National Secular Society.
