If he had made no other film, Stuart Paton would be remembered for his lavish 1916 adaptation of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Paton produced, directed, and wrote this rousing adventure fantasy, which managed to weave elements of The Arabian Nights and Rudyard Kipling into Jules Verne's familiar narrative. His directorial efforts of the 1920s were less ambitious, confined to such programmers as The Hope Diamond Mystery (1921), Married Flapper (1922), and Fangs of Destiny (1927). He retired in 1936 after directing the low-budget actioner Thunderbolt. Stuart Paton was the husband of stage and screen actress Ethel Patrick.
