Born in 1958 in St Paul, Minnesota, Tim Kaine did not grow up in a particularly political family. He graduated from the University of Missouri and Harvard Law School, where he met his wife. After they married, the couple moved to her hometown, Richmond, Virginia, where Kaine was admitted to the Bar and began to practice law, specializing in fair housing. He also taught and the University of Richmond School of Law. In 1994, Kaine was elected to the Richmond City Council, and in 1988, the council elected him as mayor. In 2001, he was elected to serve as Lieutenant Governor of Virginia. When Kaine declared that he would run for Governor in 2005, Senator Barack Obama campaigned on his behalf. In 2008 Kaine returned the favor when he became one of the first elected officials outside Illinois to endorse Obama's run for the presidency in 2008. Kaine was "very, very high" on Obama's list for a vice-presidential running mate, but instead became chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 2009, when the VP slot went to Senator Joe Biden of Delaware. After completing his term as Governor, Kaine went back to teaching at the University of Richmond, but his respite from politics was short lived. In 2012, Kaine was elected to represent Virginia as a United States Senator following the retirement of Jim Webb. In 2016, Kaine was chosen to be the vice presidential running mate of Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Although the Clinton/Kaine ticket won the popular vote by a wide margin, Trump was elected on November 9. 2016.
