With her China doll appearance and trademark bangs, Toshia Mori was the only non-Caucasian ever voted a WAMPAS Baby Star, an annual selection of promising starlets that lasted 1922-1934. Mori's year was 1932 and although she had been an alternate selection and promoted only when Lillian Miles of Reefer Madness fame dropped out, the Japanese actress was highly visible in such films as Frank Capra's The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1932), in which she played second fiddle to the exotic makeup of Swedish actor Nils Asther, and as the girlfriend of Charlie Chan's Number One son. Born Toshiye Ichioka, under which moniker she danced in several Japanese and Hollywood silent films, Mori also appeared in films as Shia Jung. She left films in 1937 and later worked as a research assistant on Robert Ripley's Believe It or Not short subject series.
