Best Romance: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Normally, cinematic romance plots are pretty straightforward: two people meet, break up or get separated, then make up to go on their way to a happy ending. When it's Charlie Kaufman writing the screenplay, however, things get a little more complex. Make that, much more complex. Ann Hornaday of the Washington Post describes Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind as "a rabbit hole of a movie, inviting viewers on a dizzying plunge through love, loss and, finally, consciousness itself." Starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, this film is a giddy, quirky head trip as it navigates the twists and turns of relationships and memory. Oh, and it's emotionally moving, too: Jack Mathews of the New York Daily News says "it is so grounded in the pain of romantic longing that it feels as authentic as a broken heart." And so, with a Tomatometer rating of 92% and an adjusted score of 84.72, Eternal Sunshine edged out Richard Linklater's highly regarded Before Sunset for the title of the best reviewed romance of 2004. Coming in third was the ensemble movie Intermission, a gritty, rowdy answer to 2003's Love Actually. Let us know what your pick for this category is here.
