One of Hollywood's greatest critical and commercial successes, this one gets everything right. Not only did the movie transcend expectations, it established new benchmarks for American cinema.
Our Favorite Iconic Scene: Picking the best scene in The Godfather is a fool's errand -- virtually every moment in Francis Ford Coppola's masterpiece is essential. If forced to choose, though, we'd have to say the most memorable sequence is at the very beginning: Connie Corleone's wedding reception. As Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) gives his date Kay (Dianne Keaton) a rundown of the key players, his father, Don Vito (Marlon Brando) takes requests for favors. Not only did this scene prompt endless speculation about real world events (many incorrectly suspected for years that Frank Sinatra got his role in From Here to Eternity with the mob's help), but it also contains the movie's signature line: "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse."
