Movie Info

The "musician" in question is the iconoclastic, Chicago-wrought jazz performer Ken Vandermark. In this documentary - a volume in Kraus's Work Series that pulls inspiration from broadcaster-cum-historian Studs Terkel's writings - Vandermark engages in candid rehearsals and performances with an ensemble; the film then features one of Vandemark's sizzling solo numbers before a closed audience.

Daniel Kraus's Musician feels radically fresh: It simply observes its title character in the manner of a 1960s fly-on-the-wall documentary.

A fascinating documentary made memorable not by its music but by its poignant portrait of a likable, if narrowly-focused, purist unwilling to compromise his values, regardless of its cost in terms of fame or his career.

Seriously off-key and out-of-tune.
