Critics Consensus

A British chiller lacking in strongly drawn characters, The Broken feels unfinished and undercooked. Read critic reviews

The Broken is a nice little film which watches like short story. It is not really scary, but rather creepy and mysterious with a good twist at the end. Recommended to fans of supernatural thrillers; The Broken is reminiscent of the Twilight Zone as well as Japanese films like The Ring and The Grudge.

In "The Broken," Gina(Lena Headey) is a radiologist living in London. Maybe she should have become a cardiologist instead, considering she and her brother Daniel(Asier Newman) almost give their father(Richard Jenkins), two days shy of retirement, a heart attack when they throw a surprise party for him. In other news, Gina is dating Stefan(Melvil Poupaud), an architect, but cannot even commit to a sock drawer. Her attention is drawn elsewhere when she thinks she sees herself driving a car which might explain the head on collision she later gets into. Outside of some minor injuries, she is alright, but cannot remember the accident itself and is referred to Dr. Robert Zachman(Ulrich Thomsen), a psychiatrist. Let me start by clarifying something I've said before. I like it when a movie such as "The Broken" accentuates atmosphere over violence and gore like it does here. Sadly, it also favors atmosphere over pretty much everything else, especially character development, firing out details about this unfortunately named family at random which even this very good cast can do little with.(And not to get too picky but what happened to the other driver in the accident?) I don't mind the lack of specifics in the resolution, mind you, just the lack of originality and that I could see coming a mile away.

The Broken is a stunning metaphor for the depersonalization of a narcissistic society so mesmerized with self-image that it literally breaks through the self-absorbing mirrors --
Sheez, who am I kidding. Freakin' ridiculous movie that I wasted my life energy on so you won't have to. Can't believe I actually watched this all the way through.
It got under my skin, all right -- like a flesh-eating virus.
