Quite a ground breaking Sci-Fi masterpiece made in 1929 as sound was creeping its way in, like the Jazz Singer this has certain scenes with dialogue but predominately a silent film.

The sets & story are rather ambitious for this film & it would have a been a significant production if its day. The story of a group of researchers who believe that if they search the ocean deep enough there are races there.

Incredible visual effects with the use of models & trick photography. This film also was blatantly anti Russian & was afraid of showing it. Very ahead of its time this film...

Has a foot in multiple worlds: land and sea, silent and talkie, Marxist pamphlet and sci-fi melodrama of the hand bomb-flinging, plastic horned baby alligator, frogmen, and sluggish octopus variety.

it looks like i'm the 4th person on flixster to rate this so i think it needs a review. it's a mostly silent underseas adventure starring lionel barrymore as a scientist who wants to prove the existence of mermen. he builds some submarines which are promptly confiscated by the military for more nefarious purposes. there're some really well done scenes including octopus attacks; very cool effects for 1929. a kind of prequel to 20,000 leagues under the sea
