This impressive sports doc finds enough drama in the situation to involve a wider audience, since the archive footage of these chaps gliding through waves the size of a house is quite something.

The film tries to tell us that money hasn't spoiled the fun, but I was much more curious about the black shorts than the Quicksilver brand board shorts.

[An] insightful account of the rise of a, pardon the pun, new wave of surfers that transformed the sport in the mid-1970s.

Some of the talk gets a little bombastic, but it's hard to deny the thrill involved.

Bustin' Down the Door entertainingly captures surfing's last great hoorah of no-holds-barred radicalism.

Happily, the filmmaker, Jeremy Gosch, puts his wide-eyed narrative together with an easy touch. With its amazing wall-to-wall footage of oceanic derring-do Bustin' Down the Door plays like visual air-conditioning.

Audience Reviews for Bustin' Down the Door

The pioneers of competitive surfing face off in the mid 1970s from Australia and South Africa, gathering on the North Shore to take on the Hawaiians for world fame. The birth of the IPS takes surfing to another level and gives surfers the ability to crown a world champion.

Fascinating and inspiring documentary! The film features great footage from both the archives and current as well as some excellent, candid interviews from surfers past and present. The accounts from the four main players really make for some emotional and sincere viewing. The last few minutes are particularly emotional and really leave the viewer with a tangle of feelings to think through as they consider the impact that a few ambitious young men have had on so many to this day. All in all an extremely worthy watch even for those with only a passing interest in surfing. Well paced, well edited and interesting throughout.

Outstanding new surf documentary narrated by Edward Norton featuring great surfing footage and an awesome soundtrack. The film chronicles the the mid-70's rise of the first pro-surfers, Bartholomew, Tomson, Cairns, Townend, Richards & Tomson and how they brought their aggresive Australian & South African surfing styles to a still much very laid back Hawaii only to eventually clash tragically with the local Native Soul Surfing legends of the day. The documentary produced and written by Shaun Tomson features interviews with legendary surfers from yesterday and today and blends an entertaining mix of surf footage, music, and editing. Outstanding movie for fans and non-fans of surfing.
