Movie Info

Social activism makes the leap from the streets to the dinner plate as documentary filmmaker Chris Taylor examines the ways in which our food system has been gradually co-opted by corporate forces that don't necessarily have our best interests in mind. So what choices to we have if we want to reject the options at the supermarket and opt for fresh and healthy food? In the late 1960s and early-1970s, a woman named Alice Waters led a group of political anti-corporate protestors in creating a food chain that operated entirely outside of the conventional system. The unintended result of that movement was the creation of a vital organic food movement that was capable of yielding locally grown, organic foods that were both healthful and delicious. In this film, Taylor offers an illuminating look at the evolution of American agricultural policy and food culture in the 20th Century while highlighting how everyday people can successfully fight back against big agribusiness.

  • This may seem an overly reductionist account. . .but the point being made is that small action undertaken, without a grand motive or a lofty cause, can still have unforeseen, potentially enormous, consequences.
